Presidency Responds To Order to Release Investigative Records on President Tinubu
The Presidency of Nigeria has clarified that the records recently ordered for release by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) concerning President Bola Ahmed Tinubu do not contain any new information. This statement follows a ruling by a Washington D.C. judge directing these agencies to disclose non-exempt files associated with past investigations into Tinubu.
In a response to media inquiries on Sunday, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Tinubu, emphasized that the documents in question have been publicly available for over three decades and did not cast any negative light on the Nigerian leader.
“Journalists have sought the Presidency’s reaction to the ruling last Tuesday by a Washington DC judge ordering the US FBI and DEA to release reports connected with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Onanuga stated in a social media post. He reiterated, “There is nothing new to be revealed.”
He explained that the reports prepared by FBI Agent Moss and the DEA have been accessible for more than 30 years and affirmatively stated, “The reports did not indict the Nigerian leader.”
Onanuga also mentioned that the legal team representing the Presidency is currently reviewing the court’s ruling. This development follows Judge Beryl Howell’s order from the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, which requires the FBI and DEA to make disclosures related to a drug trafficking investigation. The judge’s decision came in response to a lawsuit filed by Aaron Greenspan, an American businessman and founder of the legal transparency platform PlainSite, who challenged the agencies’ previous refusal to confirm or deny the existence of such records.
