US Embassy in Nigeria Announces Changes to Immigration Visa Process Starting January 2025

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has unveiled a revised immigration visa procedure that will take effect on January 1, 2025. According to an announcement made on the embassy’s official X page, applicants scheduled for interviews will now be required to visit the Consulate General in Lagos at least twice throughout the application process.

The embassy stated, “For applicants with interviews scheduled after January 1, 2025, you are required to visit the Consulate General in Lagos at least twice during the immigrant visa process.” This update aims to assist applicants in preparing for their visa interviews while reducing potential delays in the processing of immigrant visas.

Further details on the embassy’s website indicated that the initial visit to the U.S. Consulate in Lagos will focus on an ‘In-Person Document Review’ with a consular staff member. This step is intended to ensure that applicants have all necessary documentation in order for their visa interviews. The embassy emphasized, “The review allows applicants to retrieve any missing documents ahead of their visa interviews, which helps to avoid delays in application processing.”

The second visit will involve an interview with a Consular Officer, with the appointment time being arranged through the National Visa Center (NVC). The embassy added, “If you do not complete the In-Person Document Review before your visa interview, you will be required to reschedule your appointment.”

Additionally, in July 2024, the embassy announced that starting August 26, 2024, a new visa services provider will manage operations at its Abuja and Lagos consulates. This decision was also confirmed through official statements on the embassy’s website and social media channels, marking a significant transition in the visa application process for prospective immigrants.
