Wike mobilises youths against nationwide hunger protest

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has cautioned Abuja youths and other stakeholders against joining the planned nationwide protests scheduled to take place from August 1 to 10, citing concerns over the potential negative impact on peace and stability in the capital city.

Speaking during a town hall meeting with FCT youths from Abuja South Federal Constituency in Kwali Area Council, Wike emphasized that the current administration has only been in office for a year and urged residents to give it more time to deliver on its promises. He highlighted various achievements in education, health, and security sectors, citing improved security in the FCT as a notable accomplishment.

Wike appealed to residents to appreciate and encourage security agencies to do more, stating that it would be unfair not to acknowledge their efforts. He emphasized that peace and stability were more important than protests, which he believes could undermine the progress made so far.

The minister also spoke about his vision for the proposed Federal Capital Territory University of Science and Technology, Abaji, stressing that he wants to establish an institution that will be a source of pride for the nation. He revealed that efforts are underway to build classrooms, lecture theaters, and laboratories for the university.

On land matters, Wike lamented that land issues have become a major concern in Abuja, with many people seeking large tracts of land without considering the needs of indigenous communities. He urged youths to cooperate with the current government and avoid getting entangled in protests that may not align with their interests.

The minister’s warning comes as a similar town hall meeting was held with stakeholders in Abuja Municipal Area Council on Saturday. Wike expressed his gratitude to traditional rulers and area council chairmen for mobilizing FCT youths for the engagement, which aimed to enlighten them on the potential consequences of joining the protests.
