Witnesses to Testify Anonymously in Nnamdi Kanu’s Terrorism Trial

In a significant development in the terrorism case against Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), it has been decided that witnesses will provide their testimonies behind closed doors. This decision was made following a request from the Federal Government, represented by Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Adegboyega Awomolo.

During a court session on Tuesday, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja granted the request, allowing for the witnesses to testify behind a screen due to safety concerns linked to the sensitive terrorism charges Kanu faces.

Awomolo argued for the protection of the witnesses’ identities, citing the need to ensure their security amid the serious nature of the allegations. He specifically requested that their names be kept confidential to avoid jeopardizing their safety.

Kanu’s legal representative, Kanu Agabi, did not contest the application put forth by the Federal Government. Consequently, Justice Omotosho approved the measure for witness protection. However, Agabi called for a mutual understanding, seeking the Federal Government’s cooperation regarding future bail applications for Kanu.

With the agreement established between the parties involved, the Federal Government promptly proceeded to call its first witness, identified only as PWAAA. The witness has begun their testimony, marking the formal opening of the prosecution’s case against the leader of IPOB.
