Tinubu Jets off to senegal Attend President's Inauguration

President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to embark on a diplomatic trip to Dakar, Senegal, on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, to attend the inauguration of Senegal’s President-elect, Bassirou Faye.

The announcement was made by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, in a statement titled ‘President Tinubu to attend inauguration of Senegal’s President-elect Bassirou Faye,’ issued by the Presidency.

As the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, Tinubu’s visit to Senegal marks his first official trip to the country since assuming office. He has been invited by the Senegalese government to join other regional leaders in witnessing the historic inauguration ceremony, which will take place at the Diamniadio Exhibition Centre on Tuesday.

Accompanying President Tinubu on the trip will be the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, along with other senior government officials. Following the inauguration, President Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria, concluding his brief visit to Senegal.

This diplomatic engagement in Senegal adds to President Tinubu’s extensive travel itinerary since taking office 10 months ago. Senegal marks the fifth African state visited by President Tinubu, following previous trips to Paris, France (thrice); London, the United Kingdom; Bissau, Guinea-Bissau (twice); Nairobi, Kenya; Porto Norvo, Benin Republic; New Delhi, India; Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates; New York, the United States of America; Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Berlin, Germany; Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; and Doha, Qatar.

President Tinubu’s frequent international engagements underscore Nigeria’s commitment to fostering strong diplomatic relations with African and global partners. These visits serve to enhance cooperation, promote trade and investment opportunities, and strengthen ties between Nigeria and other nations across the world.

The attendance of President Tinubu at the inauguration of President-elect Bassirou Faye reaffirms Nigeria’s support for the democratic transition process in Senegal and its commitment to upholding regional stability and peace within the ECOWAS community. As a prominent figure in West African politics, President Tinubu’s presence at such events underscores the importance of regional cooperation and collaboration in addressing common challenges and advancing shared goals for the continent’s development.

The visit also presents an opportunity for President Tinubu to engage with Senegalese officials and discuss bilateral issues of mutual interest, ranging from security cooperation to economic partnerships and cultural exchanges. Through dialogue and collaboration, Nigeria and Senegal can work together to address common challenges and explore avenues for further cooperation in key areas of development.

In light of President Tinubu’s upcoming trip to Senegal, expectations are high for fruitful discussions and positive outcomes that will contribute to deepening the bonds of friendship and cooperation between Nigeria and Senegal, as well as advancing the broader objectives of regional integration and development within the ECOWAS framework.
