ASUU Issues 21-Day Strike Notice to Federal Government

ASUU Threatens Strike, Issues 14-Day Ultimatum to Federal Government

Abuja, Nigeria – The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has formally issued a 21-day strike notice to the Federal Government, according to The PUNCH.

The notice was issued after a meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) took place at the University of Ibadan.

Sources within ASUU confirmed the development, stating that the notice would be forwarded to the Federal Ministries of Labour and Education. The ASUU representative emphasized that the notice is not an ultimatum but a procedural requirement under labor laws.

“Our intention is to comply with the law. We are giving them 21 days’ notice, after which we will embark on a strike if necessary,” the source said.

This development comes after the union expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s failure to implement agreements reached in previous negotiations. On June 26, the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, met with ASUU representatives to discuss lingering issues and prevent a potential strike. However, ASUU National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, later noted that the agreements had not been implemented.

“We agreed to review the government’s progress after two weeks. If there is no implementation, we will consider our next steps,” Osodeke said.

The union’s demands include the implementation of the 2009 re-negotiated agreements, which have remained unaddressed for over six years. Additionally, academic allowances have accumulated over the same period without resolution.

The revitalization fund, intended to raise N200 billion annually for five years based on the Needs Assessment Report, has also seen limited progress, with only one payment made since 2013.

ASUU also criticized the government’s approval of new universities without providing adequate funding to support them.

The union has warned that if the Federal Government fails to address these issues within the 21-day notice period, a nationwide strike is imminent.
