Tributes Pour In as Former Boxing Champion Thierry Jacob Passes Away at 59
Former world boxing champion Thierry Jacob has passed away at the age of 59, as confirmed by the mayor of his hometown, Calais. The announcement was made on Facebook by Natacha Bouchart, who expressed her sorrow, stating, “We begin this day with sad news. Thierry Jacob died overnight, so young.”
Jacob achieved acclaim in 1992 when he won the WBC super bantamweight title by defeating Mexico’s Daniel Zaragoza in a match held in front of his enthusiastic local fans in Calais. Beginning his professional career in 1984, Jacob fought until his retirement in 1994, finishing with an impressive record of 39 wins and 6 losses. His reign as WBC champion was brief; he lost the title in his first defense against American Tracy Harris Patterson in New York.
Continuing the family legacy in boxing, Jacob’s son, Romain Jacob, also made a name for himself in the sport, capturing the European super featherweight title in 2014.
