Federal civil servants are scrambling to verify their identities on the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) portal before the July 31, 2024 deadline.
The urgency comes as the government plans to stop salaries and impose sanctions on ghost workers.
According to sources, the workers are flocking to Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS) offices nationwide to obtain their Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), a required step in the verification process. The TIN, along with the IPPIS number and salary account number, must be submitted on the portal.
This move follows President Bola Tinubu’s directive to crack down on civil servants drawing salaries while living abroad without formal resignation. The President ordered refunds from those involved and punishment for their supervisors and department heads.
Civil servants are feeling the pressure, with many struggling to meet the deadline. “We have tons of civil servants trying to register before July 31,” said a senior civil servant in Abuja. “No one wants to risk having their salaries stopped.”
The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation launched a portal for verification, following the President’s directive. The deadline looms, and civil servants are urged to act swiftly to avoid consequences.
