CJN to Swear in 11 New Supreme Court Justices on Monday

Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Olukayode Ariwoola, is set to administer the oath of office to 11 new justices for the Supreme Court on Monday.

This event, scheduled for 10 am, will take place in the main courtroom of the apex court, according to Festus Akande, the supreme court spokesperson.

The move follows President Bola Tinubu’s submission to the Senate in December 2023, urging the confirmation of 11 judges from the Court of Appeal to the Supreme Court. The National Judicial Council (NJC) had earlier recommended these justices for elevation.

Currently, the Supreme Court has 10 justices, following the demise of Centus Nweze and the retirements of Amina Augie and Dattijo Muhammad.

The Senate confirmed the nominated judges on December 21, 2023. Among the confirmed justices are Jummai Hannatu Sankey, Chidiebere Nwaoma Uwa, Chioma Egondu Nwosu-Iheme, Haruna Simon Tsammani, Moore Aseimo A. Adumein, Obande Festus Ogbuinya, and Stephen Jonah Adah.

Completing the roster, the newly appointed justices include Habeeb Adewale O. Abiru, Jamilu Yammama Tukur, Abubakar Sadiq Umar, and Mohammed Baba Idris. With their induction, the Supreme Court will have the full complement of 21 justices as mandated by the constitution.
