Lagos, Nigeria – A shocking case of alleged child abuse has unfolded in an Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court. Babatunde Idris, a grandfather, is accused of defiling his 13-year-old granddaughter, who is the daughter of his own daughter.
According to testimony provided by Olushi Okoi, a Senior Nursing Officer at Women At Risk International Foundation (WARIF), the young survivor was subjected to repeated abuse from the age of three to 13. Okoi represented Dr. Aniekan, Clinical Head/Centre Manager at WARIF, during the court proceedings.
The survivor’s parents reported the abuse to WARIF on May 11, 2018. The court heard that the grandfather’s abuse was ongoing for over a decade, with one incident involving the grandfather drugging the child with tea before assaulting her.
A medical examination conducted at WARIF revealed disturbing evidence of the abuse, including vaginal discharge and a damaged hymen. The findings were consistent with vaginal penetration.
Justice Rahman Oshodi presided over the case, which has sparked outrage and concern about child safety and protection.
