Kebbi State, Nigeria – A newly emerged jihadist group, Lakurawa, has launched a deadly assault on the village of Mera in Kebbi State, killing 15 people and seizing a large herd of cattle.
The attack has left the community in mourning as authorities and local leaders gather to address the situation.
The victims of the attack were laid to rest with high-profile figures, including Deputy Governor Umar Abubakar Tafida and the Emir of Argungu, Sama’ila Muhammad Mera, attending the funeral.
Lakurawa, which has drawn comparisons to Boko Haram, is reported to be imposing taxes and levies on residents and promoting an extremist agenda that rejects Western civilization and democratic governance. The group has been operating across Northwestern Nigeria, with the Nigerian Defence Headquarters confirming its presence in Sokoto and Kebbi states, where it is suspected of setting up bases.
Kebbi State Police spokesperson SP Nafiu Abubakar confirmed the attack, saying, “Yes, there was a terrorist attack on Mera yesterday (Friday), resulting in 15 deaths.” He added that investigations are ongoing and that it is too early to determine if the perpetrators were members of Lakurawa.
Authorities remain on high alert as they work to secure the region and curb the escalating violence.
