Dana Aircraft Skids Off Runway, Crash-Lands In Port Harcourt

Tragedy was averted as a commercial aircraft belonging to Dana Air which took off from Lagos, crashed-landed at the Port Harcourt International airport, Rivers State.

The plane with registration number 5N-SRI was said to have overshot the runway and ended up in the bush while landing.

 This is coming a week after passengers of a Dana flight shared stories of an exit door falling off upon touchdown, sharing photos of a gaping hole on the plane.

The plane which took off from Lagos and upon arrival at the Port Harcourt International Airport overshot the runway, skidding into the bush was likely affecting the wet runway which was dampened from an earlier downpour .

The photos shared showed passengers being evacuated from the plane in the bush.

153 passengers dead in Dana Air crash in Lagos in 2012

In June, 2012, a Lagos-bound Dana Air from Abuja, crashed into a two-storey building at Ishaga, at the outskirts of Lagos, killing all 153 passengers.

The aircraft, marked 5N-RAM, disappeared from the radar scope of the Lagos Air Traffic Control after communication from the tower to the pilot in command failed, before it crashed into the residential building on Tolulope Street, in Toyin area of Ishaga.

The General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, said that the aircraft hit a power line and subsequently crashed into the building which comprised of six flats.

The aircraft exploded on impact and razed the building, according to Dr. Osanyintolu.

Emergency rescue officials said that they could not yet ascertain the number of people in the building or those who were trapped in the rubble.

The Fear of Dana Air

Most air travelers in Nigeria fear to travel with Dana Air. There are some people who have said that they will rather miss an appointment than travel with the airline. Their fears stem from the repeated cases of  accidents resulting from shear laxity by the airline.

Many more have questioned why the aviation ministry have not sanctioned the operator.
