Abuja, Nigeria – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Udom Emmanuel, the former governor of Akwa Ibom State, over allegations of fraud amounting to ₦700 billion.
Sources indicate that Emmanuel was taken into custody on Tuesday at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja. He had reportedly arrived at the anti-graft agency’s office around 12:30 p.m. in response to an invitation regarding accusations of money laundering, fund diversion, and financial mismanagement.
The allegations were brought forward by the Network Against Corruption and Trafficking (NCAT), a civil society organization. The petition claims that Emmanuel received approximately ₦3 trillion from the Federation Account during his eight-year tenure as governor but allegedly left the state with a debt profile of ₦500 billion and unfinished projects worth ₦300 billion. Investigators are said to be probing his inability to account for ₦700 billion in state funds.
As of now, the EFCC has not issued an official statement regarding the arrest.
