Obaseki has previously dismissed concerns over the investigation, saying he has nothing to hide and is prepared to account for his stewardship if called upon by the anti-graft agency.
Abuja, Nigeria – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has placed former Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, on its watchlist as part of an ongoing investigation into contracts and financial transactions conducted during his administration.
Obaseki, who completed his eight-year tenure on November 12, had earlier expressed concerns about potential EFCC actions post-office, though he publicly stated he was ready to cooperate with any investigations.
The probe follows the arrest of five senior Edo State officials on November 2, including the Accountant General, Julius Anelu. The arrests were linked to alleged large-scale withdrawals from the state treasury shortly before Obaseki’s tenure ended. Meanwhile, the state’s new governor, Monday Okpebholo, has set up a 14-member State Assets Verification Committee to scrutinize the previous administration.
Sources within the EFCC revealed that while investigations have begun, there is no direct evidence implicating Obaseki personally in the alleged financial irregularities. The source noted that much of the questionable activity appeared to have been carried out through intermediaries.
“A team of investigators has been assigned to review contracts and other transactions from his administration. So far, we’ve found leads, but the transactions cannot be directly linked to him yet,” the source disclosed.
The source also confirmed that Obaseki, like all former governors, remains under close watch to prevent any attempts to leave the country without clearance.
“All former governors are placed on the EFCC’s watchlist, whether or not there are active cases against them. This ensures they are available for questioning when needed,” the source explained.
Efforts to reach EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale for an official statement were unsuccessful, as calls and text messages went unanswered as of the time of filing this report.
Obaseki has previously dismissed concerns over the investigation, saying he has nothing to hide and is prepared to account for his stewardship if called upon by the anti-graft agency.
