Elon Musk’s Cash Giveaway Sparks Controversy in Wisconsin Amid Trump’s Judicial Critique
Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has stirred controversy by endorsing a cash giveaway aimed at Wisconsin voters who participate in a petition opposing what he terms “activist judges.” This promotion comes as President Donald Trump has expressed frustration over recent judicial rulings that have impeded his administration’s efforts to overhaul the federal government through Musk’s initiative called the “Department of Government Efficiency.”
The political action committee America PAC, which supports Trump’s agenda and was founded by Musk, announced that it would provide $100 to Wisconsin voters for signing the petition against “activist judges.” The campaign, shared by Musk on his social media platform X, encourages Wisconsin residents to submit their signatures before April 1, the date of a critical Supreme Court judge election in the state.
America PAC is backing Brad Schimel, a conservative candidate, for the significant judicial position in this pivotal swing state. In a post on X, the PAC stated, “Judges should interpret laws as written, not rewrite them to fit their personal or political agendas.” Additionally, Wisconsin voters have the opportunity to earn $100 for each individual they refer who also signs the petition.
The America PAC has previously introduced various contentious initiatives, including offering financial incentives for voters who refer others to support petitions concerning the First and Second Amendments, which safeguard free speech and the right to bear arms. It has also initiated a daily lottery with a prize of $1 million for random signatories in key states for the 2024 presidential election.
In October, the Justice Department issued a warning to Musk and America PAC regarding the legality of their cash incentives, suggesting that such practices may breach federal laws against compensating individuals for voter registration.
The Wisconsin petition follows Trump’s recent harsh criticism of a judge who allegedly disregarded an order to halt the deportation of suspected undocumented migrants to El Salvador. Trump called for the impeachment of District Judge James Boasberg, labeling him as “a troublemaker and agitator,” which prompted an unusual public reprimand from the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
Federal Election Commission filings from December revealed that Musk, recognized as the world’s wealthiest individual and a significant donor to Trump, contributed $238 million to America PAC.
