Port Harcourt, Nigeria – The Rivers State University, Nkpolu-Oroworukwo campus was eerily deserted on the first day of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest, with students opting to flee to their homes for safety.
According to Protesters, The much-anticipated Hunger protest, scheduled to kick off on August 1, aims to raise awareness and bring an end to bad governance, hunger, and corruption in Nigeria. However, the university campus depicted a stark contrast to the planned protests, with only a handful of students spotted around the premises.
In an exclusive interview with a 200-level mechanical engineering student, Ezekwe Majesty, he revealed that his classes for the day were cancelled due to the protest. “We spoke to our Courserep to plead on our behalf to make today a lecture-free day because of the protest and the request was granted,” he said.
Another student, who wished to remain anonymous, disclosed that her parents had instructed her to return home the previous day for security reasons. This echoes concerns raised by the university authorities earlier yesterday, who issued a memo urging staff and students to be vigilant and cautious of their surroundings due to an anticipated nationwide protest by an “unknown group.”
