FG Issues Flood Alert: 22 States, 94 Towns at Risk

Flood Destroys 2,517 Houses, 1,000 Hectares of land in Gombe

The Federal Government has issued a flood alert to 22 states and 94 towns across the country, predicting a five-day heavy rainfall and flooding event starting from Tuesday, July 16 to Saturday, July 20, 2024.

Minister of State for Environment, Dr. Iziaq Salako, warned that locations in the affected states would likely witness heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding. The states include Adamawa, Abia, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Borno, Cross River, Nasarawa, FCT, Jigawa, Kano, Kebbi, Katsina, Kwara, Niger, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, and Zamfara.

While urging stakeholders to take proactive measures to mitigate the flooding, Dr. Salako clarified that the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation is responsible for managing dams, including the Lagdo Dam, and has not received notification from the Cameroonian government on the opening of its floodgates.

In response to the alert, the Sokoto State government has assured that it is prepared to manage any possible flooding, while the Bayelsa State Directorate of Flood and Erosion Control continues to clear drains to mitigate the impact of the flood.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to take necessary precautions and prepare for possible flooding.
