Gombe, Nigeria – The Federal Government has extended support to 8,000 wheat farmers in Gombe State by providing subsidized inputs to enhance wheat cultivation during the dry season.

Dr. Ibrahim Bomoi, the State Coordinator for the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, disclosed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Gombe.

Bomoi highlighted that the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at bolstering agricultural productivity and improving food security.

He explained that each farmer received two bags of NPK fertilizer, one 50kg bag of Urea, and one 50kg bag of wheat seeds to facilitate cultivation. The subsidies require farmers to pay 50% of the cost of fertilizer and 25% of the cost of wheat seeds.

The beneficiaries were selected from four local government areas in the state: Nafada, Kaltungo, Yamaltu Deba, and Dukku.

“The Federal Government is supporting about 8,000 farmers in Gombe to boost wheat cultivation during the dry season,” Bomoi stated. “The input subsidy is 50% for fertilizers and 75% for wheat seeds. Some farmers have started receiving their inputs, and the process is expected to be completed within the next 10 days.”

He further emphasized that the support aims to address the high costs associated with wheat farming. Aggregators have been assigned to clusters of farmers to prevent market oversupply and ensure proper utilization of the inputs.

“This is the government’s way of supporting dry season farming in the state. Similar assistance was provided during the wet season, where over 6,120 farmers received inputs to boost the cultivation of sorghum, rice, and maize,” he added.

Dr. Bomoi urged the farmers to maximize this opportunity by making efficient use of the inputs provided.
