The allegations against Simon Ekpa stem from incidents dating back to 2021 in the Lahti municipality, where he is accused of inciting violence and promoting terror in Nigeria’s south-east through his social media platforms.
Finland – Authorities in Finland have frozen the assets of Simon Ekpa, a self-proclaimed Biafran agitator, following allegations of involvement in terrorism-related activities.
The Finnish government also seized assets linked to companies associated with Ekpa and four of his alleged accomplices, who are currently in custody, according to Yle, a Finnish news outlet.
Ekpa is being detained in Kylmäkoski Prison, known as one of the toughest correctional facilities in the world. Established in January 1993, the prison is located in the Kylmäkoski municipality.
On November 21, Finnish authorities remanded Ekpa in custody for allegedly spreading terrorist propaganda via social media. His arrest, along with that of four other individuals, was carried out by the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) after a district court in Päijät-Häme sanctioned his detention over terrorism-related charges.
The allegations against Ekpa stem from incidents dating back to 2021 in the Lahti municipality, where he is accused of inciting violence and promoting terror in Nigeria’s south-east through his social media platforms. Ekpa, who styles himself as the Prime Minister of the self-declared Biafra Republic Government in Exile, is also accused of playing a central role in enforcing a “Sit-At-Home” order that has significantly disrupted economic activities in Nigeria’s south-east region.
Finnish authorities have declared that Ekpa’s offences are non-bailable. His trial is scheduled to begin in May 2025.
