Governor Fubara while making the donation reiterated his commitment to the protection of life and properties of Rivers people.
Port Harcourt, Nigeria – In a recent development today in Port Harcourt, Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, donated 100 vehicles to the Rivers State Police Command.
The vehicles were unveiled and handed over at the former Sharks FC stadium, with the governor and the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Tunji Disu, present at the event.
This donation comes amid ongoing tensions in Rivers State following the swearing-in of new local government chairmen by Governor Fubara after the expiration of the previous officials’ terms.
The State Police Command, under the directive of Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, had earlier barricaded local government council secretariats, escalating the political crisis in the state.
In October 2023, Governor Fubara was involved in a controversial incident where police officers from the state command used water canisters on him as he inspected the damage at the State House of Assembly, which had been targeted with dynamite.
The governor’s recent donation to the police has ignited public debate. Some view it as a strategic move to strengthen his relationship with the police, while others are calling for the removal of the barricades at the local government secretariats.
