California – African students with aspirations in artificial intelligence (AI) and related fields now have a golden opportunity to advance their careers, thanks to the 2025 Google DeepMind AI for Science Scholarships.
The prestigious program, now open for applications, will support postgraduate studies at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS).
Fully Funded Scholarship Program
The scholarship, fully funded by Google, covers tuition fees, living expenses, research costs, and relocation allowances. It also ensures access to essential resources such as computing equipment, internet, and electricity, enabling scholars to focus entirely on their academic pursuits.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements to qualify:
- Be African citizens and residents at the time of application.
- Possess a completed four-year undergraduate degree or a three-year degree with an honors year by August or December 2025.
- Hold an academic background in mathematics, physics, computer science, statistics, engineering, or any field with strong mathematical or computational components.
- Not have previously held an AIMS scholarship.
Scholarship Benefits
Selected candidates will receive funding for up to two years of postgraduate studies, including living and travel stipends to cover housing, relocation, and other expenses. Scholars will also gain access to AI-related conferences and events hosted by Google DeepMind, offering unparalleled networking opportunities.
Moreover, participants will receive mentorship from Google DeepMind experts, providing valuable academic and professional guidance.
Application Process
To apply, candidates must visit the AIMS application website at apply.aims.ac.za and complete the registration process by March 21, 2025. Required documents include:

- A 500-word motivation letter
- Academic transcripts
- Written responses to mathematics and coding problems available on the application portal
The selection process features short mathematics and coding tasks, designed to assess problem-solving skills. Finalists will participate in online interviews in May 2025 to demonstrate their qualifications and passion for AI and science.
