Port Harcourt, Nigeria – Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has expressed strong disapproval of the recent attacks on boat operators and sea travelers by pirates in the state.
He warned that his administration will no longer tolerate such acts of criminality, emphasizing his commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all residents, both indigenes and non-indigenes.
Governor Fubara gave this assurance during a meeting with a delegation from the Rivers Commercial District of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.
The delegation visited to formally bring the government’s attention to the plight of sea travelers and seek urgent intervention.
Represented by the Head of Rivers State Civil Service, Dr. George Nwaeke, Governor Fubara commended the union for fulfilling their civic duty by reporting criminal activities in their areas of operation to the authorities.
He reiterated that his administration is committed to ensuring proper policing across the state and prioritizing the security of lives and property.
“The security of human beings and their property is a primary agenda of this administration,” Fubara stated. “The Governor is committed to proper policing in our state. Community policing involves everyone; it is our collective responsibility to report any suspicious activities to the authorities. What you have done today is not a protest but a civic duty, and it will not be taken lightly.”
The Governor also addressed the grievances presented by the union, acknowledging the seriousness of the situation.
He condemned the actions of the pirates, noting that the criminals are often known within their communities, but fear of retribution has prevented people from reporting them to the authorities.
“Perhaps you are uncertain about your safety after reporting these criminals, but we urge you to assist the security agencies with accurate information,” Fubara said. “This administration does not condone criminal behavior, and we will act on any information provided about these flashpoints on our waterways.”
He further reassured the delegation that his administration is working diligently to ensure that Rivers State becomes a safe and attractive destination for residents and visitors alike.
“While you may not hear everything in the news, rest assured that efforts are being made,” Governor Fubara concluded. “Rivers State will soon be recognized as one of the best destinations, even for tourism.”
