Inter Miami Announces Javier Mascherano as New Head Coach
Inter Miami has named former Argentina international Javier Mascherano as its new head coach, the club announced on Tuesday. Mascherano takes over the role from Gerardo Martino, who stepped down last week citing personal reasons.
The 40-year-old coach is set to work alongside his former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi at the Major League Soccer (MLS) club. Mascherano, who previously coached the Argentine U-20 and Olympic teams during their recent participation in the Paris Olympics, has an impressive background in football. He made 203 appearances for Barcelona and shared the pitch with both Messi and current Inter Miami players Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, as well as Luis Suarez.
During his tenure with the Argentine Football Association’s youth setup, Mascherano also worked with Inter Miami players such as Tomas Aviles, Facundo Farías, and Federico Redondo. Inter Miami’s managing owner, Jorge Mas, expressed confidence in Mascherano’s ability to harness the team’s diverse talent pool, which ranges from global superstars to emerging homegrown talents.
“This role requires someone with significant experience to maximize our unique collection of talent,” Mas stated. “Javier has gained unparalleled expertise throughout his career, encompassing both playing on premier stages and coaching at the youth level. We believe he will be a crucial asset in our journey to elevate the club and establish a new benchmark for football in North America.”
Although Inter Miami enjoyed a successful season, winning the Supporters’ Shield for the best regular-season record and setting a new points record, they faced disappointment in the MLS Cup playoffs, losing to Atlanta in the initial round.
Club co-owner David Beckham expressed optimism about Mascherano’s skill set, highlighting his relentless determination and the tactical knowledge he brings to the table. “We’re thrilled to welcome him to lead our team,” Beckham said.
Mascherano’s playing career saw him shine at River Plate in Argentina and Corinthians in Brazil, followed by stints in the Premier League with West Ham United and Liverpool, before his successful period at Barcelona. He won five La Liga titles and lifted the Champions League trophy twice while at Camp Nou.
In response to his appointment, Mascherano remarked, “It’s a true honor and privilege to lead a club like Inter Miami. I am inspired by the organization’s clear ambition and the infrastructure it offers. I look forward to collaborating with everyone at Inter Miami to help elevate the club and create unforgettable moments for our fans.”
