Kano, Nigeria – The Kano State government has earmarked nearly N151 billion for the payment of monthly salaries and allowances for civil servants and political officeholders in 2025.

This was disclosed as Governor Abba Yusuf presented a proposed budget of N549.16 billion to the Kano State House of Assembly on Friday, November 8, 2024.

The state Commissioner for Planning and Budget, Musa Shanono, while briefing journalists on Monday, detailed that the allocated N150.99 billion for salaries and allowances is based on the newly approved minimum wage policy.

“This amount forms part of the proposed recurrent expenditure for the 2025 fiscal year, which stands at N236.53 billion, accounting for 43 percent of the total budget,” Shanono said. He emphasized that the governor’s wage policy adjustment is reflected in the salary allocation for the upcoming year.

In addition to the wage expenses, the commissioner explained that overhead costs for ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) are pegged at N75.57 billion. “These overheads cover running costs for MDAs and critical payments under the standing orders approved by His Excellency,” Shanono added. The debt servicing payment for the year will amount to N9.96 billion.

Shanono further broke down the N549.16 billion budget, noting that N312.63 billion is allocated for capital expenditures, representing 57 percent of the total budget. The recurrent expenditure, meanwhile, stands at N236.53 billion, covering personnel costs and operational expenses.

The commissioner also projected that the state expects to generate N449.09 billion in recurrent revenue in 2025. This estimate includes N75.72 billion in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and N373.37 billion from the Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC). “This marks an 18 percent increase in revenue compared to 2024, with a boost of over N69.3 billion,” Shanono stated.

He affirmed the government’s commitment to utilizing resources efficiently to advance critical projects and programs in 2025. “A substantial N312.63 billion has been allocated to capital projects to ensure developmental strides across Kano State,” he concluded.
