The Lagos State Government has approved and disbursed N849,555,000 in scholarships and bursaries to 10,066 students in its tertiary institutions.
This was announced by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule, at the 2024 Ministerial Briefing on Tuesday.
Scholarship and Bursary Breakdown
The breakdown shows that N335,600,000 was approved for 1,591 students as 2022/2023 Scholarship Award for undergraduates and PhD recipients, as well as the 2022/2023 Governor’s Discretionary Awards.
The government also approved the sum of N513,955,00 for 6,884 students in bursary payments for undergraduates and law school students.
Commitment to Education
The Commissioner reiterated the Lagos government’s commitment to providing effective and affordable education to residents, in line with the T.H.E.M.E.S plus Agenda. He highlighted that Lagos State-owned tertiary institutions did not join workers’ strikes, demonstrating the government’s dedication to education development.
Reading Culture and Library Digitalization
To encourage students to read widely, the state government has rehabilitated and digitalized 300 secondary schools and 40 public libraries. The commissioner explained that a monthly allocation of N250,000 is set aside for these digitalized libraries to ensure seamless operations.
Age Requirement for Admission
The commissioner clarified that 16 years remains the acceptable age for admission into all Lagos State-owned tertiary institutions. Students below 16 are not eligible for admission.
Ministerial Briefing
The ministerial briefing, which began on April 24, will continue until May 29, with various ministries giving accounts of their stewardships in the last year of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.
