The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has uncovered the cause behind the devastating fire that ravaged numerous buildings in the Dosunmu market area of Lagos Island.
According to LASEMA spokesperson, Nosa Okunbor, the fire outbreak was traced back to a generator set.
Investigations revealed that the inferno originated from a shop where a generator set was being refueled while still operational.
Mr. Okunbor explained that the generator ignited during the refueling process, leading the individual handling it to inadvertently throw the fuel towards an adjacent building, intensifying the blaze.
The fire engulfed approximately 15 structures, resulting in the collapse of six buildings, as reported by the agency.
This incident follows closely on the heels of another fire outbreak just 24 hours prior, which occurred at the Balogun market in the same vicinity. The recurring nature of these fire incidents underscores the urgency for preventative measures.
In response to the situation, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has issued a directive to halt all commercial activities in Dosunmu Street and its surrounding areas until further notice.
This directive, announced by Special Adviser to the Governor on Central Business Distress, Bola Lawal, aims to mitigate potential loss of life and maintain peace and order in the affected region.
The affected markets include Dosunmu, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Moshalashi, Woro Pedro, Obanikoro Street, Ago Tawa, Idumagbo Avenue, Idumagbo, Ido – Oluwo, and Oju Olobun Street.
