Plateau, Nigeria – At least 13 people have lost their lives following the collapse of a mining site in Bassa Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State.
The tragic incident, which took place on Saturday, has left the community and local authorities in mourning.
Dr. Joshua Riti, Chairman of Bassa LGA, confirmed the disaster on Monday, expressing deep sorrow over the significant loss of lives. According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the mining site is situated at the intersection of Bassa, Jos South, and Jos North LGAs.
Seven of the victims were reported to be from Bassa LGA. Dr. Riti expressed his grief, noting the victims were young people attempting to earn a living amid harsh economic conditions.
“This is an unfortunate incident,” Riti said. “These young people were only out in search of a means of livelihood. They put their energies to good use to sustain themselves and navigate the current economic hardship in the country but tragically met their untimely death.”
He extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and loved ones.
Reports indicate that most of the victims were youths between the ages of 18 and 30.
