Benue, Nigeria – A devastating attack by suspected herdsmen has left 13 people dead in Azege settlement, Mbaya, Tombo Ward of Logo Local Government Area, Benue State. The incident occurred on Sunday morning at around 7 am, as residents prepared for church services.
According to Benjamin Uzenda, the immediate past Caretaker Chairman of Logo LGA, the attackers were heavily armed and opened fire on the villagers, leaving a trail of destruction and death. Uzenda described the attack as “coordinated, planned,” and stated that the attackers targeted harmless villagers, including women and children.
The attack also involved arson and the destruction of farmlands and crops in the area. The perpetrators operated for hours before fleeing the scene ahead of the arrival of security personnel.
This incident is the latest in a series of attacks by armed herdsmen in Benue State, which has been plagued by insecurity and killings. The Ruruma community in Southern Kaduna, Kaduna State, has also spoken out about the devastating impact of banditry and kidnapping in their area, with over 200 people abducted and 13 brutally killed.
The community has appealed to President Bola Tinubu’s administration to establish a military presence in Kwasam, its local government headquarters, to halt the escalating killings and abductions.
