The Federal Government has commenced the distribution of free gas cylinders to promote clean cooking energy for families across the country.

The program, tagged LPG Grassroots Penetration, aims to move at least one million homes to clean cooking gas by 2030.

Under the ‘Decade of Gas’ initiative, the government plans to distribute 250,000 gas cylinders to women in rural communities across the country.

The program was flagged off in the Apo Resettlement area of Abuja, where 1,000 3kg cylinders filled with gas were handed over to rural women from the six area councils of the Federal Capital Territory.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, stated that the government is determined to increase domestic gas usage, improve the health of women and girls, and reduce the reliance on solid fuels such as firewood, kerosene, and charcoal.

The ‘Decade of Gas’ program, funded by the private sector, aims to bring an end to the use of woods and kerosene in homes and aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s theme: “Gas to Prosperity, a Renewed Hope”.

Coordinating Director of the ‘Decade of Gas’ program, Mr. Ed Ubong, emphasized the commitment to distribute over a million cooking cylinders, mainly to women in rural areas, at a rate of 250,000 per year.

The free gas cylinders initiative is expected to improve the lives of millions of Nigerians, promote clean cooking energy, and utilize Nigeria’s significant gas resources.
