Ibadan, Nigeria – A fire broke out at the Medicine Laboratory of the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, Oyo State, in the early hours of Sunday, September 22, 2024.
The incident was confirmed by the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, ‘Funmi Adetuyibi.
The fire reportedly began at 8:10 a.m. on the third floor of the hospital, caused by a spark in a change-over box. The prompt response of the hospital staff, alongside fire service officials, helped contain the situation, limiting the damage to the change-over panel in one room.
In a statement, the hospital’s management clarified that no major damage occurred and the fire was quickly extinguished. “The courageous staff of the hospital who were on the ground put out the fire immediately. The Fire Service officials also arrived on time and provided excellent assistance to mitigate the effects of the outbreak,” the statement read.
The hospital further assured the public that the incident did not disrupt any activities and that the images circulating on social media do not accurately reflect the situation at UCH. Under the leadership of Chief Medical Director Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, measures have been taken to prevent such occurrences in the future.
