Osun State, Nigeria – A tragic incident has claimed the life of a 100-level student of the University of Ilesa, Osun State, identified as Gbolahan Ojo, after he was electrocuted during a thunderstorm while using his phone connected to a power outlet.
The fatal occurrence happened on Friday evening amid a heavy downpour at the student’s off-campus residence located near the Prototype Engineering Development Institute (PEDI) junction in Ilesa.
According to an eyewitness and fellow student, Olawale, the deceased had been playing a game on his mobile phone, which was plugged into an electric socket, when a lightning strike triggered a surge that led to his electrocution. He was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Confirming the incident, the management of the University of Ilesa described the death of the young student as both tragic and unfortunate. A statement released by the institution’s Registrar, Mr. Funso Ojo, disclosed that the deceased was a freshman in the Department of Business Administration.
Following the incident, the University authorities immediately informed the Police. After conducting preliminary investigations and granting clearance, the remains of the deceased were moved to the morgue at Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesa.
In a swift show of empathy and solidarity, the father of the late student was promptly contacted and has since arrived in Ilesa. Top officials of the university, including the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Taiwo Asaolu; the Registrar, Mr. Funso Ojo; the Dean of Student Affairs; the Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences; the Head of Department of Business Administration; and the Area Commander of Police, were present to receive and console the grieving father.
The university management also revealed that necessary arrangements have been put in place to support the bereaved family as they navigate this moment of immense sorrow.
“The entire University community mourns this painful loss and prays for the repose of Gbolahan’s soul. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, classmates, and the Department of Business Administration,” the statement concluded.
