Canadian-based Nigerian, Oraye St. Franklyn, has expressed disapproval regarding gospel singer Nathaniel Bassey’s decision to file a lawsuit over claims concerning the paternity of Mercy Chinwo’s newborn.

Bassey had asked the Nigeria police to investigate and prosecute four social media users—Okoronkwo Ejike, Kingsley Ibeh, Terrence Ekot, and DJ Spoiltkid who accused him of fathering Mercy Chinwo’s newborn.
The controversy began when Mercy Chinwo posted pictures of her baby on the social media, sparking speculations among netizens about the child’s resemblance to Singer Nathaniel Bassey.

Despite an apology from the individual who initially made the claim, stating it was “nonsensical,” Franklyn, a lawyer and communications expert, argued that the apology did little to dispel the belief due to the photos’ apparent similarity.
Nathaniel Bassey, unhappy with the allegations, opted to pursue legal action against those spreading the misinformation.
However, Franklyn criticized this approach, stating that a lawsuit would not fully address the underlying issue and would merely provide temporary relief.
According to Franklyn, the belief in the possibility of Bassey’s paternity would persist even after legal proceedings, undermining the effectiveness of the lawsuit in resolving the matter conclusively.
