Tragic Tanker explosion hits Niger state

The tanker explosion occurred in the early hours of Sunday, September 8, 2024, around 12:30 am, near Dendo community in Agaie Local Government Area.

Niger State, Nigeria – A devastating petrol tanker explosion has claimed the lives of over 30 people and left more than 50 cattle burnt in a tragic incident along the Lapai-Agaie road in Niger State.

The explosion occurred in the early hours of Sunday, September 8, 2024, around 12:30 am, near Dendo community in Agaie Local Government Area.

The accident involved a petrol tanker, which collided head-on with a trailer truck transporting passengers and cattle from Wudil, Kano State, en route to Lagos. In addition to the tanker and the trailer, two other vehicles—a crane truck and a pickup van—were also caught in the explosion.

The Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba-Arab, confirmed the tragic loss in an official statement, noting that rescue operations are ongoing. “Over 30 people have already been confirmed dead, with more than 50 cattle burnt alive,” the statement said.

The NSEMA Rapid Response Team, in coordination with Local Government Emergency Management Committees (LGEMCs), is continuing search and rescue efforts, as several bodies remain trapped in the wreckage.
