Abuja, Nigeria – Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has launched a probe into bribery allegations within the Nigerian Correctional Service, sparked by a viral voice note from celebrity Bobrisky.

The controversy surrounds Bobrisky’s claim that he served his six-month prison sentence for abusing naira notes in a private apartment, allegedly arranged by his godfather and senior correctional officers.

In the voice note, Bobrisky reportedly revealed that his godfather, in collaboration with the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, organized for him to avoid serving his sentence in prison. He also claimed that a bribe of N10 million was paid to secure the arrangement.

Bobrisky further alleged that he paid a N15 million bribe to officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to drop money laundering charges against him, leaving only the naira abuse case for which he was convicted.

Additionally, the crossdresser reportedly claimed that human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) and his son, rapper Falz, contacted him with an offer to help secure a presidential pardon for N10 million.

Femi Falana, through his legal team, swiftly denied any involvement in the matter and has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to social media influencer Martins Otse, a.k.a. VeryDarkMan, to retract the statements linking him to Bobrisky or face legal action. A pre-action letter has been sent to VeryDarkMan, demanding a formal apology and the removal of the defamatory statements.

Reacting to the allegations, the Minister of Interior condemned the reported acts of corruption and unprofessionalism within the Nigerian Correctional Service, vowing that any form of misconduct would not be tolerated. The minister has appointed the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani, to lead an investigative team to look into the allegations and present a comprehensive report.

In a statement released by the minister’s media aide, Alao Babatunde, Tunji-Ojo emphasized the ministry’s commitment to transparency, integrity, and accountability. The investigation, he assured, would be rigorous, impartial, and result in appropriate disciplinary measures for those found guilty of wrongdoing.

Falana, in his legal response to the allegations, described the claims as “false, misleading, and defamatory,” asserting that they were designed to damage his hard-earned reputation.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria further warned that if the retraction and apology are not forthcoming, legal actions would be initiated, including claims for damages.
