Mother and son granted N100m bail for alleged N122m property theft

Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court on Wednesday granted a N100 million bail to Lola Disu and her son Ahmed Disu, who were arraigned last week for allegedly property theft worth N122 million.

Following their arraignment, the duo had been remanded in Kirikiri prison awaiting their bail hearing. During the proceedings, their defense counsel, Solomon Ojo, requested bail on liberal terms, arguing for their release. Despite opposition from the police prosecutor, N.W Uhua, the judge approved bail for each defendant at N50 million, with two sureties required.

The court stipulated that one surety must be a director in the Federal Civil Service, while the other must own property in Lagos and submit the original title deed to the court. Additionally, both the defendants and the sureties must surrender their international passports. The trial has been adjourned to June 7.

The 14-count charge against Lola and Ahmed Disu alleges that on June 25, 2021, they conspired with others to steal property valued over N122 million from Uccas Resources Ltd, represented by its Managing Director, Ukata Christian. The charges also include accusations of forging a court order intended to be used against Uccas Resources Ltd and its MD.

Items allegedly stolen include computers, office furniture, air conditioners, printers, scanners, copiers, industrial water filters, confidential documents, and a variety of office equipment. One specific charge detailed the theft of reception area items valued at over N1.7 million.

According to the police, the charges fall under Section 390 (8)(c) & (9) of the amended Criminal Code, Cap. C38, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. Both defendants have denied the allegations, pleading not guilty.
