Nigeria to Host Inaugural African Military Games in November
The African Military Games will help to promote physical fitness and teamwork among military personnel.

Kaduna – Nigeria is set to host the maiden edition of the African Military Games in November, with 44 African nations expected to participate in 19 sporting events.

The announcement was made by Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Abidemi Marquis, Director of Sports at Defence Headquarters and Chairman of the Organizing Committee, during a press briefing over the weekend in Kaduna.

AVM Marquis outlined the various sports that will be featured in the 2024 Armed Forces Games, including basketball, lawn tennis, golf, track and field, combat swimming, obstacle crossing, taekwondo, kickboxing, volleyball, and archery, among others.

He also revealed that the selection of athletes to represent Nigeria at the Games would take place from September 23rd to 27th.

A total of 1,600 athletes from various military formations across the country will compete in the 19 events, which will be hosted at various venues in Kaduna State, including the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Murtala Square, and military facilities such as the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) and the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Base.

Themed “Enhancing Military Professionalism through Sports,” the event aims to promote physical fitness and teamwork among military personnel. It will also serve as a trial to select the best athletes to represent Nigeria at the African Military Games.

According to AVM Marquis, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) selected Kaduna as the host city as part of efforts to boost the local economy.

The African Military Games mark a significant milestone for military sports in Africa, with Nigeria leading the way in organizing this prestigious event.
