Nigerian Cruiserweight boxer Efetobor Apochi reignites Hunger After his Recent outing
Nigerian cruiserweight boxer Efetobor Apochi has expressed his excitement about returning to the boxing ring after achieving a ninth-round technical knockout victory over Dionardo Minor at the Hilton Tampa Downtown in the USA.
At 37 years old, Apochi recently signed with Christy Martin Promotions, and he reflected on his comeback fight via social media on Monday, sharing videos that showcased his dominant performance. He remarked, “If that’s what ring rust is, I’ll take it, because it feels damn good to be back! Stepped in, stopped a guy who’s never been stopped (for the test, of course), and guess what? Still feels good to be back. Alignment first, action second, results were inevitable TKO victory.”
This fight not only marked a successful return to the sport for the hard-hitting boxer, but it also established him as the first fighter to ever stop Minor, indicating that Apochi’s infamous knockout ability remains unaffected despite challenges in his recent career.
With a professional record standing at 12-3, all his wins secured by knockout, Apochi described his recent partnership with Christy Martin Promotions as a timely opportunity for rejuvenation in his career. “My spirit has never been broken,” he stated. “Even though I’ve faced tough challenges, they have only honed my skills. Christy Martin Promotions has provided me with this chance to make a comeback. I am eager to compete in a world title eliminator with the WBC soon, and I aim to contend for the title before the year concludes.”
Originally from Ughelli, Nigeria, Apochi’s journey into boxing was unconventional; he studied microbiology at the Federal University of Technology Owerri before officially beginning his boxing career at 21. Reports indicate that he participated in over 700 street fights during his high school years, which helped him develop his fighting spirit for the ring.
In the amateur circuit, Apochi gained recognition at the 2011 All-Africa Games, where he secured a silver medal against expectations. He later led the Nigerian Boxing Team at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, achieving a notable upset against current IBF and Ring Magazine Cruiserweight Champion Jai Opetaia in the quarterfinals, ultimately finishing his amateur career with an impressive record of around 64 wins and 8 losses.
