Tragic Death of Nigerian Boxer Olanrewaju Segun ‘Success’ Linked to Sudden Cardiac Arrest
Former Nigerian professional boxer Olanrewaju Segun, known as ‘Success’, passed away from sudden cardiac arrest during a bout in Ghana last Saturday, according to an autopsy report. The preliminary findings, shared by Remi Aboderin, Secretary-General of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control and President of the West African Boxing Union, indicated that further investigation is required to understand the underlying heart condition that contributed to his death.
“The initial results from the post-mortem examination confirm that Olanrewaju died due to sudden cardiac arrest. However, we still need to conduct further examinations on his heart before his body can be returned to Nigeria for burial, which is expected to take about two weeks,” Aboderin stated.
The autopsy was performed on April 2, following a court order after the boxer’s untimely death. Olanrewaju, 40, had been competing at Fight Night 15 of the Ghana Professional Boxing League when he collapsed in the ring during a match against Ghanaian fighter Jon Mbanugu. At the time of the incident, Olanrewaju was leading on points in a scheduled eight-round light-heavyweight contest.
Medical personnel at the Bukom Boxing Arena quickly responded, removing his gum shield and attempting to resuscitate him as he struggled to breathe. Olanrewaju was swiftly transported to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, where he was later pronounced dead.
An accomplished athlete, Olanrewaju was a former National and West African light-heavyweight champion, boasting a professional record that included 24 fights, with 13 victories 12 of which were by knockout alongside nine losses and two draws since his debut in 2019.
