The Senate has also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a bye-election to fill the vacancy.
Abuja, Nigeria – In a move aligned with the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Nigerian Senate has formally declared the Edo Central Senatorial seat vacant.
This development follows the inauguration of Senator Monday Okpebholo as the Governor of Edo State on November 12, 2024.
According to Section 68(1)(b) of the Constitution, a lawmaker’s seat becomes vacant upon assumption of another public office. Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the declaration official, citing the constitutional basis for the decision.
The Senate has also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a bye-election to fill the vacancy. This move ensures that the Edo Central Senatorial District continues to have representation in the upper chamber.
The declaration was prompted by a letter from Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro, who requested that the Senate President make the declaration and notify INEC accordingly. With the seat now officially vacant, preparations are underway for a bye-election to determine Okpebholo’s successor.
