The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to engage in dialogue with the conveners of the #EndBadGovernance protests rather than relying on security agencies to clamp down on the demonstrators.
In a statement released on Friday by the Head of Information and Public Affairs, Benson Upah, the NLC emphasized that its own upcoming protest, aimed at demanding the implementation of the minimum wage agreement, will proceed as planned if the government does not take action.
EndBadGovernance protest Not Related to Minimum Wage
The NLC clarified that the ongoing national protests are distinct from the issue of the minimum wage. “We find it necessary to reiterate that in our statements of July 22nd and 23rd, 2024, we had advised the government to dialogue with the leaders instead of engaging in unhelpful rhetoric, as it was within their constitutional right to protest,” the statement read.
“Our position on government meeting with and engaging in sincere dialogue with the leaders of this action remains unchanged. It’s the best way to go,” Upah added.
The NLC continues to urge the government to adopt a more constructive approach in addressing the grievances of the protesters, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and engagement.
