Ndubuaku noted that the Umuahia meeting, attended by LP leaders, including Peter Obi and Alex Otti, acknowledged the end of Julius Abure’s tenure as LP chairman since June 9, 2024.
Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Political Commission and its National Transition Committee have given conditional support to the Peter Obi and Governor Alex Otti-led initiative to reposition the Labour Party (LP).
Speaking on the development, Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku, Acting Chairman of the NLC’s Political Commission, described the initiative as a “right step in the right direction.”
Ndubuaku noted that the Umuahia meeting, attended by LP leaders, including Peter Obi and Alex Otti, acknowledged the end of Julius Abure’s tenure as LP chairman since June 9, 2024.
The NLC Political Commission and its National Transition Committee welcomed the formation of a 29-member interim administration for the LP, with Nanedi Usman as interim leader.
However, Ndubuaku emphasized the need for consultation and recognition of the NLC Political Commission’s role in the formation and appointment of the caretaker committee’s members.
The NLC Political Commission is reportedly in discussions to retain and sustain the Labour Party National Transition Committee as an organ of strategic conflict management and policy development.
This development comes as the LP aims to reposition itself amidst internal crises and ahead of future elections.
