Oando Foundation’s Clean Our World project reaches 69,500 pupils, fostering sustainability and expanding environmental education nationwide.
The Oando Foundation has announced a remarkable achievement in its commitment to environmental education, revealing that over 69,500 pupils have been empowered through its various programs. This milestone is attributed to the success of its flagship initiative, the Clean Our World (COW) project, which focuses on raising awareness about sustainable practices among young Nigerians.
The Clean Our World project, launched to address environmental challenges, aims to instill a culture of responsibility in young people by teaching them about waste management, recycling, and climate action. Speaking on the program’s progress, Mrs. Adekanla Adegoke, Head of Oando Foundation, highlighted its evolution and impact:
“From reaching seven schools in three communities in COW phase one to 54 public primary schools in 25 communities during the current phase, we have demonstrated our effectiveness in promoting environmental education, sanitation, and recycling.”
The fourth phase of the project, COW IV, has introduced innovative activities to deepen environmental education, including teacher capacity building, provision of educational resources, and practical exercises for students.
Collaboration has been a cornerstone of the project’s success. Oando Foundation’s partnership with Sumitomo Chemical has significantly enhanced its ability to deliver impactful programs, particularly in Lagos State. Together, they have improved environmental education and encouraged sustainable waste management practices across schools.
Additionally, the foundation works closely with the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) to align its initiatives with local educational frameworks and priorities.
Mrs. Adegoke emphasized the importance of partnerships, stating:
“Environmental education plays a crucial role in equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to address complex environmental challenges. Through strategic collaboration, we are building resilient communities and empowering future leaders for sustainability.”
Beyond Lagos, the Foundation is set to expand the Clean Our World project to Plateau State, aiming to impact over 6,000 direct beneficiaries in 20 public primary schools. Planned activities include establishing green clubs, organizing gardening and recycling initiatives, and implementing programs to teach students about climate change and ecological preservation.
