Former Nigerian Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, has tragically passed away after a brief illness in an undisclosed hospital in Nigeria.

The 72-year-old, who also served as the first civilian governor of Abia State, was a notable figure in Nigerian politics, known for his contributions to science, technology, and innovation.

Dr. Onu’s political journey included a bid for the presidential flag of the All Progressive Congress (APC) during the 2023 general election, where he contested against President Bola Tinubu. Despite his aspirations, he was unable to secure the nomination.

Throughout his career, Dr. Onu was recognized for his expertise as an engineer and author, leaving a lasting impact on the Nigerian political landscape. He served as the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation from November 2015 until his resignation in 2022.

The announcement of his passing arrives merely a day following the tragic demise of Nigerian actor Junior Pope, who lost his life in a boat accident during a film shoot in Delta State.
