Residents of Golden Valley Estate (GVE), located in Okuruama community in Port Harcourt, Rivers state have stormed the office of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) in their area decrying the long suffering occasioned by four months of power outage in the area.
Leading the residents, the chairman of the GVE Estate Association, Chief Opuoyibo Lillywest told our reporter that the estate has been deprived of electricity supply for the past four months, following a faulty transformer which was taken away by PHED.
“A little issue on our transformer, PHED came and carried it. They said they want to do a little work on it. Since that four month till today, nothing has happened. See these men and women gathered here, they have bought fuel until they are tired. They are now living in darkness in these four months. Their things in the fridge have gone bad. Why we came here this mourning, we said we are not coming here with anything to fight anybody. We are saying give us back our transformer! (sic)” Chief Lillywest said.
The estate chairman said that the estate had made frantic efforts to get PHED to fix the transformer and return it but they (PHED) have refused to return the transformer, leaving the estate residents without power supply for the past four months.
Some of the residents who spoke with REPORT AFRIQUE said the lack of power supply to the estate has put a huge burden on their financies as they have to depend on generator sets to power their houses.
The residents said they would continue to block the entrance into the PHED office until their transformer is returned and power restored to the estate.
REPORT AFRIQUE made efforts to get the views of some PHED staff seen in the area but they declined to comment on the issue.
