In Bauchi State, Nigeria, a distressing video has emerged showing a police officer fatally shooting a protester during an #EndBadGovernance demonstration in Azare town.

The incident reportedly occurred on Monday afternoon and has since gone viral on social media.

The video, recorded in front of the Katagum Local Government secretariat, depicts a policeman standing beside a white Toyota Hilux van. After hitting the protester twice, the officer is seen aiming his rifle directly at the victim and pulling the trigger. The officer then walks away from the scene, ignoring the crowd’s outcry.

Local sources indicate that the deceased was allegedly one of several individuals detained by police, although this information remains unverified as authorities have yet to release an official statement.

In response to the violence, which included the burning of parts of the local government secretariat, destruction of vehicles, and vandalism of former Deputy Governor Baba Tela’s home, the Bauchi State government has imposed a 24-hour curfew in the Katagum Local Government Area.

Amnesty International has condemned the use of lethal force against protesters, highlighting that security personnel employed deadly tactics to address demonstrations driven by hunger and poverty. Amnesty International has called for a Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the fatal shootings in Kano, where at least 10 protesters were reported killed over the weekend.

Muyiwa Adejobi, the Force spokesman, stated that while there were instances of killings during the protests, police involvement in these deaths has been denied.

The Nigeria Labour Congress President, Joe Ajaero, has condemned the actions of the police and other security forces, labeling the events as a “massacre” of protesters.
