Abure Re-Elected as Labour Party National Chairman Despite NLC Opposition

Despite facing opposition from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Julius Abure secured a second term as the National Chairman of the Labour Party, receiving unanimous affirmation from delegates at the party’s national convention held in Nnewi, Anambra State.

During the convention on Wednesday, chaired by Mr. Ikechukwu Emetu, Deputy Governor of Abia State, Abure emerged victorious, maintaining his position despite ongoing discord with NLC leadership led by Joe Ajaero.

The NLC had previously called for Abure’s resignation and urged the immediate formation of a caretaker transition committee to facilitate a legitimate and all-inclusive national convention. On March 20, disgruntled workers gathered outside the party office, demanding Abure’s removal over allegations of financial misconduct.

Rival factions within the party contested the NLC’s involvement, with disagreements over party leadership. Former NLC President Ayuba Wabba weighed in, asserting the party’s accountability to the congress, citing its formation under NLC leadership and registration by the union.

Wabba emphasized the party’s purpose as a platform for workers, pensioners, and farmers to exercise their rights, rooted in the NLC’s constitution and objectives.

Julius Abure’s re-election signals a continuation of his leadership within the Labour Party, despite ongoing tensions with the NLC. The discord underscores broader challenges within the party, as stakeholders navigate questions of governance and representation.
