Rivers State, Nigeria – Protests broke out at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) headquarters in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Thursday, as tensions build ahead of the Local Government elections set for October 5, 2024.
Large crowds of demonstrators descended upon the party’s secretariat, prompting security personnel to intervene to manage both the crowd and the ensuing traffic congestion, according to reports from Channels Television.
Court Bans RSIEC From issueing Voters’ register Ahead of Rivers LG election
The unrest stems from rising unease regarding the delay in the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) release of the 2023 Voters’ Register to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).
On September 30, 2024, Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja issued a ruling that prohibits INEC from providing the voters’ register to the RSIEC, citing ongoing legal disputes as the reason.
Notwithstanding the court’s decision, Governor Siminalayi Fubara affirmed that the elections would proceed as planned. He expressed confidence in the Supreme Court’s previous ruling, which mandates that all states in Nigeria must establish democratically elected local government officials, a stance that further supports his commitment to the upcoming elections.
