The Labour Party leadership, under Julius Abure, has accused Yunusa Tanko, campaign spokesman for presidential candidate Peter Obi, of colluding with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to hijack the party.
In a statement by National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the party alleged that Tanko made unflattering remarks about the party and attempted to undermine its leadership.
Tanko had earlier stated that Obi’s visit to the LP Secretariat was a reconciliatory move, not an endorsement, as reported by some media outlets. However, the party questioned Tanko’s motives, citing his history of using political positions for personal gain.
The party also criticized Tanko’s involvement with the NLC, stating that he was not authorized to speak on Obi’s behalf and that his actions were detrimental to the party’s interests.
The Labour Party warned Tanko to cease using Obi’s name and to desist from attending illegal meetings, such as the one conducted by the NLC’s Political Commission.
The party also called on the NLC’s Political Commission to recognize the law and stop constituting a public nuisance with their actions.
This development is the latest twist in the ongoing crisis within the Labour Party, with factions vying for control and legitimacy.
