Obasa, who had held the Speaker position for nearly ten years, has refused to accept his removal, claiming he remains the rightful leader of the Assembly. However, the 36 lawmakers opposing him have maintained that Meranda is now in charge, vowing to resist any attempt to reinstate him.
Lagos, Nigeria —A fresh political storm has erupted in the Lagos State House of Assembly as lawmakers have firmly rejected Mudashiru Obasa’s claim to the speakership, insisting that Mojisola Meranda remains the legitimate Speaker.
The crisis escalated on Thursday when Obasa forcefully entered the Assembly complex alongside two lawmakers, Ayinde Akinsanya (Mushin Constituency I) and Noheem Adams (Mushin Constituency II), sparking tension among members. His arrival was met with strong resistance from a majority of the legislators, who reaffirmed their support for Meranda.
Addressing journalists at the Assembly complex, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Security, and Strategy, Steven Ogundipe, stated that the lawmakers were resolute in upholding Obasa’s removal.
“Obasa was not elected as Speaker by his constituency. We endured his master-slave leadership for nearly a decade. Now, we’ve had enough, and we’re not backing down,” Ogundipe declared.
Obasa was elected to the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Agege Constituency I in 2007. He was re-elected in 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023. He served as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly from June 2015 until his impeachment on January 25, 2025.
Obasa, who had held the Speaker position for nearly ten years, has refused to accept his removal, claiming he remains the rightful leader of the Assembly. However, the 36 lawmakers opposing him have maintained that Meranda is now in charge, vowing to resist any attempt to reinstate him.
