Edo State, Nigeria – An assassination attempt on Henry Okojie, a federal lawmaker representing the Esan North-East/Esan South-East Federal Constituency in Edo State, was thwarted by security personnel on Friday.
Okojie, who is married to Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson, was reportedly targeted by armed men suspected to be political thugs.
According to Michael Ihaza, media aide to Okojie, gunmen posing as police officers arrived at the lawmaker’s residence in a Lexus GX 470 with Rivers State license plate PHC 253 FF.
The gunmen claimed to have an appointment with Okojie and were allowed into the residence’s sitting room.
The attack was foiled when security personnel attached to Okojie intervened. Two of the armed men managed to escape, while the driver and one other suspect were apprehended. They are currently being interrogated by officers from the Nigeria Police Force’s Area Command in Uromi.
During questioning, the suspects reportedly confessed that they were sent by leaders of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Esan North-East Local Government Area.
Attempts to reach the Edo State Police Command for further comments were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
